Another thing that we never got round to doing when we were living in Tasmania, a trip on the West Coast Wilderness Railway, aka ABT Railway (named after its inventor), aka Rack and Pinion Railway.
The Mount Lyell mine needed to ship its copper from Queenstown to the coast, and the only viable option was to traverse the west coast range, a steep thick rainforest environment. To do this required new technology and the ABT rack and pinion system was built.
It was a great success and these days, runs as a tourist operation instead of a mining one.
A great half day out.
