Field Trip Hazards...

Out and about on a field trip today. Not too many of the usual hazards, too cold for snakes, bushfires, etc., a fence around the open cut area with appropriate signage. Maybe the usual potential for sharp quartz splinters and the like, but not a big issue. On the way however, we came across a single sheep in the middle of the road, and a bit later, a tree down, causing a bit of bush-bashing to go around it. On the way home, a whole flock of sheep! Short video below . Nobody with them, no farmer, no sheepdog, nothing. And we had been travelling at 100kph! Managed to slow down and pass them safely 😁

Close Encounter with an Emu...

Came across this little critter today at Tower Hill, near Warrnambool, Victoria... Video below 😁

ABT Railway, Queenstown, Tasmania...

Another thing that we never got round to doing when we were living in Tasmania, a trip on the West Coast Wilderness Railway, aka ABT Railway (named after its inventor), aka Rack and Pinion Railway. The Mount Lyell mine needed to ship its copper from Queenstown to the coast, and the only viable option was to traverse the west coast range, a steep thick rainforest environment. To do this required new technology and the ABT rack and pinion system was built. It was a great success and these days, runs as a tourist operation instead of a mining one. A great half day out.
