Travelled up to Ararat, western Victoria, yesterday and dropped in to the Green Hill Lake reserve, just to have a look. We were surprised to find an old deep lead gold mine there!
A bit of research back home showed this to be the Upper Langi Logan Mine that was worked for only a couple of years in the early part of the last century. There are extant footings of some sort of building, and a reasonable sized mullock heap. So you would have expected a bit of a return on that work.
Apparently not! Records indicate that there wasn't any gold recovered. Maybe it was what we refer to today as a "Tax Dodge"!
The image here is where the shaft is, or was.
